Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as) have been highly esteemed for his learning and eloquence. The Imam received the title of Baqir (Splitter of Knowledge) due to his extensive knowledge and his enthusiasm to teach to other people. Although Imam Baqir (AS) was not looking for power, the caliph of the time, Umar Ibn Abdul Aziz and his successor, Hisham Ibn Abdul Malik repeatedly harassed and felt threatened by the Ahlul Bayt and the Imam’s presence. Since his peaceful living was devoted to people’s spiritual guidance, he was not tolerated by the government. The more the Umayyad Government learned about Imam’s prestige and popularity, the more intolerable his existence became. A saddle was presented to the Imam in which poison was applied most skillfully. When he mounted on it the poison affected his whole body. After a few days in pain, the Imam passed away on the 7th of Dhul Hijjah.
